School Programs

Several programs at IS are school-based, but receive PTSA support either through grants or volunteer commitments.


AVID
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a rigorous academic elective course for grades 7 and 8 that focuses on writing, inquiry, and collaboration to accelerate student progress. AVID is a support system that includes tutorial, note taking, writing as a tool of learning and, most importantly, open discussion between students and staff about how students learn best. Students whose test scores reflect potential, but whose grades show underachievement are often nominated as candidates. Students and parents must agree to participate and sign commitment contract in order to participate.

Drama
Drama is a very important part of our school and we hold several productions each year. Typically there is a middle school production, a high school production and an all school production.

Foreign Exchange Program 2012 Program Underway!
The foreign exchange program at IS provides an opportunity for our students studying French to host students from France for a three-week period during the school year. Later in the year, usually during Focus Week and Spring Break, the IS students in the program visit France. 

Jazz Bands and Choir
In addition to the mandatory bands and choirs made up of students opting for music as their art elective, IS has three elective groups as well: Middle School Jazz Band, High School Jazz Band and Jazz Choir.

School Clubs
Most school clubs fall under the auspices of the Associated Student Body (ASB), a student-run and funded organization that focuses on community spirit and extracurricular activities. Some of the clubs, such as Robotics, occasionally request and receive PTSA support. Current school clubs include:
